If Your Car Engine Is Experiencing Low Compression: See The Causes Below

The compression of car engines refers to when air and gas are mixed together in the cylinders of an engine. This process is necessary for the car to move and function. If there are problems with the compression process, you can expect all kinds of vehicle problems.
It is easy to spot if you have a low compression problem as misfire can occur when trying to start the engine. Either that or the engine is performing poorly when driving the vehicle down the road.

You just need to understand the main possible causes of low
compression in a car engine and then repair or replace any damaged parts. The five most common causes of low compression in car engines are listed below.

1.
Holes in the piston


You apparently know that the cylinders of an engine have pistons. These pistons typically consist of an aluminum alloy and are said to be able to cope with the combustion force.

However, if the engine overheats, hot spots get on the piston. After a while, these spots burn holes through the piston. As soon as this happens, gases emerge through these holes and cause little compression.







2.
Leaky valves



The head of each cylinder contains exhaust valves and intake valves. Air and fuel enter the intake valve for the combustion process. The resulting gases emerge from the outlet valve.

If these valves become overheated, they may leak gas from them prematurely. Once this happens, you have low compression.

Typically, the valve seals can wear out over time, allowing the gases to escape, reducing cylinder compression.

3.
Worn timing belt


There is a toothed belt or chain in each engine that connects the camshaft and the crankshaft. If the toothed belt is broken or damaged, the camshaft could no longer turns.

This means that the exhaust valve or the intake valve cannot be opened or closed properly. This destroys the combustion in the cylinders and no gases can be released. So you have low compression.

4.
Defective head gasket


There is a gasket between the area at the top of the engine to which the cylinder head is connected. If for any reason the head gasket becomes faulty and begins to break, it will leave a small hole between the cylinder and its head.

This is known as a blown head gasket and causes the gases in the cylinder to exit the hole in the gasket. Then you have low compression and poor performance. Failure of the head gasket between two cylinders can result in a compression leak in both cylinders.

5.
Bad piston rings


Overheating can cause the piston rings to brake or become damaged. This causes carbon gases to escape through the rings because they can no longer seal them inside the cylinder. As you probably know by now, this type of leak has little compression.
