The first electric vehicle from Mazda will be presented to the world later this year. Mazda has now confirmed that it is a completely new model with a battery electric power-train and not an electrical derivative of an existing Mazda vehicle. The EV is likely to
be a small crossover or hatchback in light of current market trends and the competitive environment for EV's from established brands.
Mazda demonstrated a test mule based on the new CX-30 crossover and its e-TPV platform is shared with an electrified power-train, which is available with a range extender gasoline engine. This prototype used a 140 hp electric motor and a 35.5 kWh battery. Mazda has in the past talked about using rotary engines as range extenders for future plug-in hybrid models.
